Raising Pigs The Right And Ethical Way

At Wesley Wells Farm, we believe farming is more than growing food—it’s about raising animals with respect, care, and purpose. Our pigs aren’t just a product. They’re part of our farm family. From the moment a piglet is born until the day it leaves our farm, we work hard to give it the best life possible. That means clean pens, nutritious food, lots of room to roam, and gentle, daily handling.
So, what does wholesome, ethical pig farming look like? Let us show you how we do things a little differently.
🐷 Our Piglets Are Raised with Love
It all starts with our mama pigs, or sows, who are given space to move, nest, and care for their babies naturally. We don’t use harsh confinement methods like farrowing crates. Instead, we create cozy straw-filled pens where they can lay, stretch, and bond with their piglets.
Once the piglets are born, we monitor them closely to make sure each one is nursing, warm, and thriving. Our farm is hands-on—meaning we’re out there everyday checking on every animal, and those pigs get used to human interaction early on.
Weaning is done gradually to reduce stress. Piglets start nibbling on solid feed while still with their mom, then we slowly transition them to their own pen when they’re ready. This helps prevent digestive issues and emotional stress that often come from sudden weaning.

🐖 A Girl and Her Pig: Juliette’s Story
Our daughter Juliette has been raising pigs since she was 12 years old. Now 17, she’s grown into a capable and passionate young farmer who loves her animals deeply. One of her favorite pigs, Charlotte, was originally headed for the butcher last spring. But as it turns out, God had other plans. After a last-minute delay due to fair season, Wesley noticed Charlotte was looking… different. A few weeks later, it became clear—she was pregnant! A neighbor’s boar had gotten into the pen during a brief escape, and Charlotte gave birth to 10 healthy, energetic piglets.
That unexpected twist turned into a beautiful chapter. One of Charlotte’s daughters recently gave birth to three piglets of her own, proving the legacy continues. Charlotte has become a bit of a legend around here—and she’s earned her forever spot on the farm. It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do. Raising pigs isn’t just a job—it’s a story we get to live out as a family.
🌾 Feed You Can Feel Good About
What we feed our pigs matters. They get a balanced diet that includes high-quality grain, fresh water, and plenty of minerals. We avoid unnecessary antibiotics, and our pigs are never given growth hormones—because we believe animals grow best when they’re healthy and happy, not rushed.
We also supplement with natural treats like fruits and veggies from our garden when available. Not only does this reduce waste—it makes for some very happy pigs!
🐾 Space to Move, Root, and Be Pigs
One of the biggest differences at Wesley Wells Farm is how we house our animals. Our pigs aren’t stuck in dark, cramped barns. They have access to large pens with fresh bedding, and many are raised outdoors with shaded shelters so they can root in the dirt, sunbathe, and play.
Pigs are smart, curious animals—and we believe they deserve a life that lets them act like pigs. That’s why we give them room to explore and enrichment to keep them mentally active.
🙏 Farming with Purpose
At the heart of it all, our mission is simple: raise animals the right way—and honor God in the process. We believe we’ve been given this farm as a gift and a responsibility. Proverbs 12:10 says, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals,” and that verse shapes how we treat every creature on our farm.
It’s not always the easiest or cheapest route—but it’s the one we believe in. Because when you treat animals with kindness and care, you produce not only better pork, but a better testimony of God’s love for all creation.
Thank you for supporting humane, faith-rooted farming. It truly makes a difference—for the animals, the farmers, and your family.
